October 28th, 2011

So this article is devoted to the error:

adding the printer connection failed

That occurs to your Print Spooler on the step when you are trying to install your printer and connect it via USB or search for it in the network. In stead of successfully connecting your printer and starting to print you see this:

Add Printer
Adding the printer connection failed. The local print spooler service is not running. Please restart the spooler or restart the machine.

Driver issue

And as you see it is very similar to errors I described in other articles. If this happens only to one printer and you can easily connect others thats surely the drivers deal and you should find newest driver for your printer on the web. Here is a list of main printer vendors and url where you can find latest updates on your printer:

Generally you can easily find your driver by typing in Google:

“Your Printer Model” driver download

and locate your vendors website.

Print Spooler issue

However, if printer refuses to connect even with the newest driver here what you can do. There is standard Microsoft multi-system automatic Fix It tool that is intended to work out such types of problems. It can be downloaded here: Microsoft Fix It for Print Spooler

It works on Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7, however you will need .NET Framework of at least 2.0 version to be installed on XP (Others have this by default). Basically, what it does is restarting spooler and cleaning cache, but if this operation is unsuccessful it restores all Print Spooler settings to default ones.

Other great tool that can help you in fix process is “cleanspl.exe” or CleanSpooler utility that is a part of Windows Server 2003 Resource Kit but works perfectly on other versions of Windows (except Windows 7).

Here is how it look like:

clean spooler utility

It is quite easy to use and effective however here is “how-to” video that shows how to install and use it. Mention that it will wipe all your printers and you will need to reinstall them.
